Tela Brown worked as a patient care technician (PCT) for 21 years, but she was ready for new challenges and new opportunities. Now, Tela is a student at Research College of Nursing and awaits a new career as a registered nurse (RN).

“I've become very comfortable with the role of a PCT and what comes with it. Nursing school is teaching me a different role with different responsibilities. It's pushing me out of my comfort zone but also pushing me towards my dream.”

As she navigates nursing school, she also works on a nephrology unit. Eventually, she plans to move to a transplant center or become a certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA). Regardless of where she lands, Tela knows exactly how she will approach the job — with a smile, positive attitude, and an open mind.

“I want to advocate for my patients when they are unable or when they feel like they are not being heard. It’s intrinsic and feels good being able to help others. I like to say that nursing is my calling.”

The Research Foundation is helping Tela realize her dream by providing scholarships for her nursing education. Regardless of where she lands, Tela knows exactly how she will approach the job — with a smile, positive attitude, and an open mind. Scholarships helped her focus on studying and grades instead of bills, books, and tuition.

“Everyone has a dream but not everyone has the resources. Scholarships help make it possible for students like myself to pursue and achieve their dreams in today's economy.”
