KANSAS CITY, Mo., (Oct. 11, 2021) – The Research Foundation has awarded Charlie’s House up to $22,000 for their Safe Now, Safe Later program. The funding will be used to prevent injuries among children in transitional housing.
Charlie's House was established and serves as a resource for families seeking safety and injury prevention information. Their mission is to prevent injuries to children in and around the home by increasing safety awareness, public education, and distribution of safety devices. The organization focuses on families with children from income-challenged homes in the Kansas City area.
The Safe Now, Safe Later program helps families in temporary housing understand the importance of practicing safety precautions once they are established in a permanent home. Charlie’s House works directly with groups providing transitional housing and identifies safety devices needed to make each living unit safe for children. The program has formed partnerships with Amethyst Place, Salvation Army, Pet Grooming Project, Hillcrest Hope, and River of Refuge. Charlie’s House staff determine what safety needs and devices are required to prevent injuries and accidents and work with each organization to ensure the devices are properly installed. Once more permanent housing is established, each family is encouraged to take their safety devices into their new home.
Families are also encouraged to visit the Safety Demonstration House and learn more ways to make their new home safe for their children. A Safety Demonstration House Resource Center also provides them with additional safety devices for their new residence.
“Partnering with Charlie’s House has provided The Research Foundation a perfect opportunity to expand our injury prevention efforts,” Cynthia Randazzo, The Research Foundation president and CEO, said. “Their Safe Now, Safe Later program increases parents’ awareness on how to prevent accidents. Creating an injury-free environment at home is foundational in creating a safer community for all children.”
